Consent and engineering apply once a wall exceeds roughly 1.5 metres, sits near a boundary, cuts into a bank, or carries a surcharge such as a car park or driveway. Where the site allows, a design below those thresholds keeps the council out, which most clients prefer.
When consent is required, an engineer designs the wall. Initial paperwork usually sits with the designer or engineer, not us. We book council inspections and see sign-offs through so they do not delay the build. A recent retaining wall and deck project required four inspections.

Steep sites, tight access and raised gardens
Steep, awkward sections are usually workable, sometimes with deep piles, sometimes by cutting a track for the digger. Our machine fits access as narrow as 980mm, and a 600mm digger can be hired on tighter sites, so gates and side paths don't necessarily rule the work out.
Drainage, backfill and levels are set so a terraced slope holds rather than washes out. Raised gardens often go with retaining, so raised beds are built into the wall itself or as custom timber boxes while we're already on your section.

Usually not for a wall under 1.5 metres with no extra load above it. Above that height, close to a boundary, on a bank or carrying a load, engineered plans and building consent are required.
Timber eventually breaks down, while Keystone retaining walls and other segmental block systems contain no timber. Drainage behind the wall matters because water build-up adds load.
