Most lawn failures start underneath, long before the turf goes down

A patchy, uneven lawn is one of the quicker things in a garden to put right. Left alone, it remains a weekly chore: mowing over bumps, watering dry spots or hauling the mower down steps to a patch the size of a rug.

Rob digs the area out, re-levels it, then fertilises and prepares the soil before any turf goes down, because that groundwork determines how the lawn holds up long term, not just in its first few weeks.

Instant tall fescue turf, hydroseeding across larger areas or artificial grass in awkward corners can all be discussed on site, depending on the space, access and budget.

Ground prepared properly before laying new lawn

New lawn installations come up a couple of times a month, and turf features in many landscaping builds, so lawn turfing is a core part of what we do. The ground is dug out, re-levelled, fertilised and the soil prepared first, because that preparation determines how long the lawn lasts.
Excavation is done in-house with our own diggers and trucks, including sites where side access narrows to around 980 mm. A smaller 600 mm machine can be hired if the gap is tighter.

Where levels need holding at a lawn's edge,
retaining walls and raised gardens can be built into the same job.

Tall fescue turf or hydroseeding

For Auckland lawns, Rob usually recommends tall fescue: robust, hard-wearing, drought and shade tolerant, and good-looking without constant attention. Turf comes fresh from Fine Lawn in Hamilton, trucked up weekly rather than sitting on a pallet.

Instant turf gives a finished surface the same day, suiting most sections, pool surrounds and courtyards. Size and cost decide the method: from 300–400 square metres up, hydroseeding through our coordinated subcontractor is usually cheaper.

Irrigation can be included, with a specialist for larger systems; Rob stays your single contact.

Lawns are often the final stage of a garden makeover, and monthly or quarterly garden maintenance is available.

Artificial lawn in east Auckland for awkward spaces

Artificial grass suits small lawns and awkward corners: the patch down some steps, where hauling a mower is a nuisance or pointless. Quality varies between suppliers, so we only use products we trust. A professional synthetic lawn installation depends on careful preparation and attention to detail:
  • Up to 10 kg of sand per square metre brushed in, holding the turf down and blades upright
  • Pins, plus stapling to buried timber, for secure edges
It also suits pool landscaping, where mowing space is tight.

Hydroseeding sprays seed over prepared ground and the lawn grows in from scratch. Instant lawn is turf laid in rolls, so the surface is finished the same day. Over larger areas, hydroseeding through our subcontractor generally works out cheaper.

Yes, irrigation can be included as part of the project. Larger systems are installed by a specialist contractor, with Rob coordinating the work. If you already have an electrician or irrigation contractor, we can work alongside them.

The existing ground is dug out and re-levelled before the turf is laid. Sand is then brushed in, which helps hold the turf down and keeps the blades sitting upright. Pins and stapled edges are used where required.

Most products carry a seven to 10-year guarantee depending on the brand, and a good one should realistically last 10 to 12 years. Rob's own artificial turf at home has been down about 10 years and still looks fine.

Yes, it is pet friendly. Pick up after the dog and hose the area down. Artificial lawn installation is most often chosen for smaller areas and spots where getting a mower in and out is more trouble than it is worth.
