A new pool area isn't complete until the landscaping is

The pool company packs up, the water goes in, and the surround is still bare dirt. Left too long, that means mud tracked indoors, an area nobody uses over summer and pool fencing requirements still outstanding.

Kensington Landscaping starts where the pool builder stops: paving, timber pool decking, stairs, screens, glass, aluminium or timber fencing, gardens and turf. Rob Figgins is your point of contact throughout, coordinating pool coping specialists, concrete placers and electricians as needed, and booking council inspections where the design calls for them.

Everything beyond the pool shell

The pool company digs, sets the shell and plumbs; everything outwards is ours. Call early if your pool is still an idea: Rob recommends trusted builders, whom you contract directly.

Existing surrounds are rebuilt after the interior surface or coping; we don't resurface, but can refer.

Pool coping and concrete placing are subcontracted to faster, better-value specialists; we prepare the ground and set falls away from the water. Water's-edge decking is hardwood, Kwila or Vitex, as on
decks and pergolas; composite buckles and Garapa can split.

Tight access keeps excavation in-house: our digger fits 980 mm gaps; 600 mm hireable. Poolside work often joins a
garden makeover.

Fencing, screens and council requirements

Pool fencing is one of the most important parts of any pool landscaping project. We supply and install glass, aluminium and timber pool fencing, plus privacy screens and trellis. Height, footings and distance from the pool affect what can be built nearby, so decks, steps and pergolas are planned around those limits from the outset, not reworked later.

Where inspections are required, we liaise with council inspectors and book them in. One recent retaining wall and deck project needed four inspections. Consent paperwork is normally prepared by a designer or engineer; we can recommend an architect if drawings are needed.

Raised gardens or
retaining walls suit changing levels around the surround.

Subtropical planting and turf around pools

Palms and subtropical species suit poolside conditions, and plants are positioned so heavy leaf drop falls away from the water, reducing skimming. Nikau, astelia and pittosporum feature regularly in east Auckland gardens, each chosen to suit its specific spot.

Instant turf can be laid across the surround. Kensington Landscaping usually recommends Tall Fescue, supplied by Fine Lawn in Hamilton, for its drought and shade tolerance.
Artificial lawn works well in narrow strips, tight corners and stair landings, where mowing is awkward.

On larger jobs, irrigation is coordinated with specialists and quoted separately. Swimming pool landscaping in Auckland has been our work since 2003.

Evergreen, low-litter planting causes the least trouble. Nikau, astelia and pittosporum hold their leaves and suit Auckland conditions. Deciduous trees near the water mean constant skimming, so those usually sit further back.

Textured surfaces are preferred, laid with falls running away from the water. Pool paving and coloured concrete have both been used around pools in Howick and Whitford, with materials discussed during planning.

Glass, aluminium and timber pool fencing can be installed as part of the surround. Height, footings, boundary distances and proximity to the water are worked through at design stage, with inspections booked where required.

Yes. Old paving can come up, surrounds can be re-levelled, screens or raised gardens added for privacy and planting replaced. If resurfacing or new coping is needed first, contacts can be recommended and timing coordinated.

Timing depends on the amount of paving, decking, fencing and retaining involved. A quote follows a site visit of up to one hour. Once your job starts, we stay on that site until it is finished.
